From December, 2008 through May, 2009, I was an intern for the Drew
Michael Taylor Foundation of Shippensburg, PA. During those five
months, I was primarily responsible for helping with various stages of
event planning, creating new promotional materials, updating existing
fliers and brochures, and manning the information tables at various
programs and events as a representative for the foundation.
The
Drew Michael Taylor Foundation is a private, non-profit organization
created in 2006 by Randy and Marcie Taylor after the loss of their son,
Drew. They are busy year round with projects honoring Drew’s memory and
helping children in need. They achieve this vision with monetary
donations, help from friends, family, and support of volunteers. The
foundation has created various programs including grief and loss
support groups, scholarships, awards, recreational and educational
opportunities for families of the community. It’s really quite amazing.
The following is a list of major events and my contributions:
Dunks For Drew
In planning for the annual January event, I sent media reminders to
local newspapers and television stations, created and distributed a
flier, for which I won third place for submission in the Spring 2009
CoJo Awards; at the Heiges Field House, I sold t-shirts and books from
the information table.
Shippensburg H.S. Alumni Basketball Game
Alongside the squad of varsity cheerleaders, I collected registration
checks and donations at the door. My primary role was planning the
buffet dinner for 70 guests at Knute’s Pub & Grill that followed
the game.
Ready, Set, Go!
After assisting the teachers set up food, I photographed the adults and
children in action at various sessions of the program. I also sold
books and t-shirts from the information table. Afterwards, I wrote an
article for The Sentinel highlighting the success and involvement of
the Drew Michael Taylor foundation and Shippensburg University in
making the event possible for the community.
Harrisburg Senators Game
I created a flier to be placed on the foundation website for the
Harrisburg Senators game which featured the Drew Michael Taylor
Foundation as the Community Organization of the game. An on-field
pregame interview was conducted, Randy and Marcie had on-air time on
the Senators radio broadcast and I passed out brochures, fliers, and
self addressed envelopes for donations on the concourse during the game.
Community fundraiser at Pizza Hut in Shippensburg
I
organized a buffet fundraiser and created a poster to distribute in
town and at the restaurant to promote Drew Michael Taylor as a local
foundation helping children. Community members were directed to eat at
the buffet on the designated day. Fifteen percent of the sales were
donated to the foundation.
