SFX:   SOUND OF WRTING ON PAPER

MALE: Dear Mr. Slumlord.  I would’ve written earlier, but I’m so busy enjoying myself!  You really should see this place! My private room overlooks a white sand volleyball court. I worked out at the fitness center this morning. Yeah, it rained today, so I watched a movie on my 42’ flat screen tv. Tomorrow, I’m going to play horseshoes, then grill dogs and burgers for dinner with the girls next door. The staff here is so friendly! They invited me to an ice cream sundae social at the
Clubhouse. I should’ve treated myself to the good life sooner! …
(SFX: MALE SIGHS)

MALE:(sarcastically) The truth is Mr. Slumlord, I’ve found a fool to sublet your one-room efficiency. Thanks for your hospitality but I’ve found a place to call home! ...

Technical Communication Skills Summary

Technical communication refers to communication in the workplace. Success in any type of career is partially based on how well one can write, speak to colleagues, supervisors, clients, and the public.

My ability to perform everyday tasks such as writing memos, e-mails, instructions, reports, and presentations will be helpful as a member of an organization. Communicating to outside organizations in the form of letters, web writing, research, and articles will most likely be necessary as well.

The samples posted on my website represent graded class assignments and group projects:

Proposal to Revise the Academic Dishonesty Policy

October 11, 2005

Mr. Thomas Dunn
Student Senate President

Dear Mr. Dunn:

I am a junior studying Communications and Public Relations. I am writing to you to propose a revision of the existing Academic Dishonesty policy at Shippensburg University.

I have reviewed the Dishonesty Policy in the student handbook, the Swataney. Our current policy seems to be that of the Stone Age in comparison to both our neighboring state schools and nationwide colleges and universities. I found no equivalent in Shippensburg’s Dishonesty Policy when comparing it to other schools academic integrity policies. We lack a traditional honors code to begin with. Now that others have modified honor codes, Shippensburg is left in the dust.

You may contact me with any questions or comments in regard to my proposal.

Sincerely,

(Ship Room Raters Project ) Status Report

Memo
Date:          November 16, 2009
To:              Dr. Carla Kungl
From:         Ship Room Raters
Subject:     Status Report

Purpose
This is a status report based on the current progress we have and are making on our website.

Summary
We have been accumulating research on potential Shippensburg off-campus housing through websites and surveys handed out to current students. We have begun to work on the website and we are currently about half way done. We have completed the home page as well as the individual homepages for the individual sites contained within. We still have to analyze the data from the surveys we have received back and include it in our website. We are currently on schedule to complete the website and present it to the class on December 11, 2009.

Memo: Audience Comparisons Kia vs. BMW

To: Dr. Carla Kungl
From: Beth Weyer
Date: 11/29/2009
Re: Audience Comparisons, Kia vs. BMW

The purpose of this memo is to contrast the target audiences of print advertisements for BMW and Kia. The criteria for which the audiences will be compared include differences in economic means, age, attitude, and lifestyle- all of which are inferred or blatantly portrayed in the distinct messages of the two brands through writing and creative design.

Summary
In comparing the two advertisements, Kia has a stronger visual with the use of color and creative images. BMW’s edge is expressed in the copy of the advertisement.

Memo Rolling Stone Article Design Analysis

To:        Dr. Carla Kungl
From:    Beth Weyer
Date:     11/29/2009
Re:     Rolling Stone Magazine, Pink

This memo will analyze two pages among a six page feature about pop singer Pink in September’s issue of Rolling Stone magazine. I will be examining the spread against major features of designing a document found in chapter 12 of our text book.  After discussing the three most successful design elements used- columns, pull quotes, and graphics- I will suggest how two particular pages could be designed differently.

Independent Beauty Consultant Skills Summary

Since October 2008, I’ve managed my own direct sales business with Mary Kay Cosmetics (while attending college full-time). In doing so, I’ve gained valuable organization and time management skills, communication skills and sales experience.

Utilizing product knowledge is essential when demonstrating skincare and make-up application tips during appointments and skincare classes. Presentation skills, uncovering customer’s needs, listening, and overcoming objections are an important part of the sales process.

Maintaining quality customer service is also necessary in order to keep customers. Phone etiquette, verbal and written communication skills are used to interact, write thank you’s, send E-cards, and make phone calls to follow-up with customers after consultations and purchases.

I’ve used technical writing and computer design skills to create promotional materials. Computer programs used include Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Word,  and Excel. Samples of my work are titled:

Mary Kay Fundraiser (flier and order sheet)
